There was a time when a piece of jewellery meant a lot more than just an accessory to the mankind. Studying old excavated jewellery gave great insights to historians to learn more about ancient culture!

When was Jewellery invented?
There is no concrete answer to this question as the claims are vague. Many claims suggest that it was invented 80,000 years ago. And recent reports suggest that a 100,000 year-old beads, made from Nassarius shells is the oldest jewellery known! One thing is for sure that jewellery existed right from the very first civilization!

Why was Jewellery invented?
The need for jewellery changed with changing time. Like first it was invented for functional reasons such as pinning of clothes together. Later it took the place of money.

Slowly coins and paper money came in to the picture and jewellery became a symbol of status, power and wealth! For instance, in Rome, only certain ranks of people were allowed to wear jewellery.

What was Jewellery made of?
Some of the earliest found jewellery was made from snail shells and even ostrich egg shells! These pieces of jewellery are dates 75,000 years back. In the Stone Age, necklaces and bracelets made from stones, bones, tusk, and berries were spotted. Copper jewellery started surfacing some 7,000 years ago. And the origin of gold and other metals jewellery can be traced to 3,000 to 5,000 years in Egypt!
